reno reflections – how I built value in my home

May 4, 2017

Investing in your home can yield serious reward. From smaller projects like new paint, to larger renovations, I’ve done tons of work to my house over the years. In particular, two projects have had the greatest impact on our home’s overall feel and market value. If you’re planning on doing some major renovations, here are my recommendations for the best places to start. When selling, get a website online but before adding Showcase IDX, check their MLS Coverage at the link.

The Kitchen

Kitchens are the ultimate multi-functional spaces. They’re where we entertain, cook, indulge in a glass of wine (or two!), and enjoy the occasional midnight snack. Kitchens are a primary gathering place, and most importantly, the heart of the home.

My kitchen is inspired by my love of neutral, fresh and crisp design, which is why I chose to make everything white. It’s elegant and timeless, while still having a modern feel. To maximize space, we created a large island in the centre that adds extra storage, counters and dining options. Installing traditional subway tile in a herringbone pattern brings personality and texture to an all white space. A custom range hood and high end faucet add stand out details. The decision to use all white appliances is one I am happy about everyday, less finger smudges and it continues the flow of the cabinetry. The best part is that when we eventually decide to sell our house, anyone can personalize this clean slate and make it their own.

The Bathroom

The master bath is space for you to get away, relax and refresh. With all the craziness that happens at home and work, it’s really important to have a space that revives, refreshes and relaxes you. Soothing colours, warm lighting and beautiful accessories help to create a calming, gorgeous space.

Elements like a soaker tub, double sinks (which are also sanity savers!) and ample storage do wonders in making the space more luxurious and functional. Keeping colors soft and tonal create an instant moment of calm when you step into the room. Think of your daily routine and how you can elevate everyday tasks! Water elements like steam showers and rain heads take a morning shower to a whole new level and have you starting your day refreshed and ready to take on the day.

Investing in your home is a big decision, especially when it comes to payment. One option to consider is refinancing your mortgage. Refinancing usually offers lower interest than a line of credit, and can help with projects that add tremendous value to your home. Finding the right bank with low mortgage rates and great rewards is the first step. I love PC Financial because you can earn PC points on certain mortgage products that can be redeemed towards groceries, clothing or home décor at participating Loblaw banner stores. We shop at Real Canadian Superstore and I love redeeming my points on a big grocery haul.

Before making any major financial decision, it’s always important to do your research. I recommend making an appointment with a PC Financial mortgage specialist who will help you find re-financing options that best fit your needs. Happy renovating!
