For years I’ve wanted to try natural dyes for our easter eggs but the kids were still very into all the crazy bright dyes and I couldn’t disappoint them.. they’re getting older now and I thought it would be a good time to update our tradition! We used beets, saskatoon berries that I had in the freezer from our picking last summer, tea bags and tumeric. The prep is a little more time consuming but it’s so fun seeing what colors you’re going to get, the surprise when our purple saskatoon berry dye gave us the prettiest shades of blue and blue green was incredible!
I very simply peeled and chopped up a few beets, popped them in 4 -5 cups of water with a bit of vinegar and let them boil for about 30 minutes… same for the berries and tumeric and I just let the tea bags brew in hot water. Strain the different ingredients into bowls, let them cool and you’re ready! We played around with the depth of color keeping some in longer than others and by dropping an egg into different dyes. I love the result!
